SBUS trouble means the 5820XL has lost contact with, or power to, a module on its SBUS. The SBUS (terminals 16-23) is the 4-wire bus that connects the panel to modules such as the 5815XL SLC expander, the 5860 and 5865 annunciators, the 5824 printer interface and the 5895XL power expander (Page 3-3, 4-28) [1].
The manual lists two SBUS troubles: SBUS Com for a communication problem and SBUS Pwr for a power problem (Page 7-36) [1].
Central station reports use the events SBUS expander trouble and SBUS Class A supervision lost (Page 9-1) [1].
To find the cause:
Check the wiring at terminals 16-23. Don't loop wire under the A, B, + and - terminals of an SBUS device. Break the wire runs so each connection stays supervised (Page 3-3, 4-9) [1].
Check each module's DIP switches. Every module needs its own ID, and it has to match the module list in the panel's programming (Page 4-28) [1].
Make sure the module has been added to the system. JumpStart adds any connected 5815XL, and you can also add modules by hand (Page 10-2, 4-28) [1].
Check the load. One SBUS can't supply more than 1 amp worst case. If your modules add up to more, move some to a 5895XL power expander, which provides another SBUS (Page 4-6) [1].
On a 5815XL, measure 27.2 to 27.4 V across its + and - terminals with AC power on, and watch its green LED. Half a second on, half a second off means it has power but hasn't been added to the system. No flashing at all points to the wiring between the module and the panel (Page 10-2) [1].
